Latine (or Latinx) Heritage Month takes place on September 15 to October 15

WMPG will be paying tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our community throughout our programming.

Oct 14th – 50th Homecoming/Birthday Party & Parade at, the new McGoldrick Center for Career & Student Success as part of the USM Homecoming week on October 14th from 6-9pm.  Featuring food, music and the premiere of the WMPG 50th anniversary video featuring many voices and faces of WMPG.

WMPG Presents Open Mic Night This Friday @ 7pm - McGoldrick Center USM Portland

WMPG Presents an Open Mic Night This Friday @ 7pm in USM’s McGoldrick Center in Portland. All are welcome, come check out the new building on Bedford Street. Bring your guitar, bass, iPhone, really any instrument. It all happens this Friday, September 8th. Pre-register if you are bringing a band so we can be prepared! Should be lots of fun. The Replacements Tommy Stinson interviewed on WMPG

Tommy Stinson is a tried and true, bonafide, living rock and roll legend. He joined the irreverent and iconic Minneapolis band, The Replacements in 1979

He grew up touring America in a van and playing every bar and club from here to Timbuktu before he was even 21 years old. He started his own band, BASH & POP in 1992 and joined Guns N’ Roses in 1998.

Husky Chat Podcast launch

As students start to appear back on campus and new students arrive at the University of Southern Maine, we wanted to create a podcast to help new (and existing) students adapt and connect with their new community.

Memphis Lighting interview with Bill and Rick

On The Night Train Show next Wednesday, August 16, from 2:30 to 3 pm, Rick and Bill will be conducting a live interview with the two founding members of the local Blues-Rock band, Memphis Lightning. In the WMPG on-air studio will be singer and guitarist Darren “Lightnin” Thiboutot and his father, “Big Red,” who is also the band’s bass player and background singer.

New home-share program for asylum seekers

On yesterday’s Let’s Connect Greater Portland radio show, Grier Miskell from the Quality Housing Coalition and Aaron Geyer, Director of Social Services for the City of Portland spoke to Tom Bell about a new home-share program to provide housing for asylum seekers who on Aug. 16 could be homeless when the Portland Expo shelter shuts down.

WMPG Free Since ’73! On August 31, 1973 WMPG was born! Well kinda, there’s more to the story than that but that’s when we officially began broadcasting as a FCC licensed radio station.

DJ and USM alumnus Rick Scala brought Tina Turner to Gorham in '74

What a cool article by our Public Affairs team here at USM about Rick Scala, USM alumni and co-host of the Night Train, who brought Tina Turner to the Gorham Campus of USM back in 1974

“We were here right at the golden time of college concerts,” said Scala.   Among all of those renowned acts, Tina Turner still stood out in Scala’s memory for her boundless energy, amplified by her backup dancers, a blaring horn section, and Ike’s virtuoso musicianship on guitar. A show that big gave fans far more than their money’s worth with advance tickets priced at $4 for students and $5 for the general public.
