Jazz at the Movies returns

WMPG’S Jazz At The Movies team and the Portland Conservatory of Music are excited to kick off our Fall 2026 season with a very special showing of the film The Monkathon, a new movie of  guitarist Miles Okazaki’s live solo performance of the entire Thelonious Monk’s songbook. If you’re a Monk fan, you won’t want to miss this!

Award winning guitarist Miles Okazaki decided to honor his hero, Thelonious Monk, by performing all 66 of Monk’s magnificent compositions in one single night.  No one had ever attempted this daring feat before, and the guitarist and marathon runner, Miles, went into training first for this monumental challenge. The results and the music are nothing short of stunning.  The NY Times described Okazaki’s virtuosic 5 hour solo concert as a “monumental statement of devotion.”

Come enjoy an hour from this epoch film recital, plus a short documentary “Behind The Monkathon” following the marathon guitarist in training. And, as a very special treat, WMPG’s Jazz At The Movies is pleased to announce that Miles Okazaki will introduce the movie in person and do a short Q& A with the audience.

Join us for this amazing Monk marathon, “The Monkathon” on Sat. , Sept. 26th, 7pm, at Portland Conservatory of Music. Admission is Free and you’re invited.
