BACKSTORY  Since Radio Junk Drawer materialized in Portland, Maine in 2001, Mister Pence has offered junk-drawer perspective every Wednesday afternoon: smart sound, garage visionaries, pop with a problem. Between March 2020 and June 2022 Mister’s junky outlook shifted to a Garage, a Furnace, and a Garden; post-plague the show and its Mister returned live to the studio near the Roundabout at Surrenden Fields, and 2023 saw the restoration of the name Radio Junk Drawer. Thank you for listening.

Jeff Bell art teacher, Windham High School

Listening to Archive Apr. 5th with my AP Studio art class and they’re loving it!
I’ll send you a shot of them at work if I can. Anyways, regarding Tomorrow Never Knows, a quirky phrase taken from Ringo during an interview, John found it hilarious. The replacement is from loops they each went home and experimented with. Paul along with a bunch of random other songs recorded seagulls. That’s what is most prominent.
Cheers!

Jeff Bell, thank you SO much for listening and for writing. Thrilled that your AP Studio art class loved the show along with you! Viva la radio! Perhaps one or more of your students may be interested in listening to–or even joining–the Blunt Youth Radio program on Monday evenings.
All the best to you and your students at WHS!

Mr. Pence;
With great pleasure
I listened to your program on March 13th. Keep up the great work.
I’m thinking you’re the Dave Pence who has (had?) a father of the same name that sold insurance.
If you are, my mom, Ruth Randall
(deceased), used to take care of you and Wesley Littlefield
(still doing well) during the day.
I just thought I’d say hello. I’m not a Facebook, or Twitter user.

Paul, thank you for listening and thank you for taking the time to write. I am that David Pence, indeed, and I remember the time spent in and around your family’s house so long ago very fondly. Bless your late mom. Best, David.

RDJ is ALWAYS good but it was REALLY good yesterday (7/12/17). Sent that ep to a couple people in hopes of getting them to start listening. You’re amazing! 🙂

I was Music Director and a DJ at MPG back around 1987. (“Coffee and Cigarettes.”) Radio Junk Drawer sends me back to the days of spending every last cent buying vinyl and seeing bands. RJD is the freshest show in Maine. Never ever stop, Dave.

Sarah, thank you so much for listening to RJD and for your generous comments! Thrilling to know there are listeners out there like you.

Hey Dave, On today’s show you played a great song by Kendra Smith but you didn’t know where it came from. The EP is called Kendra smith presents the guild of temporal adventurers. Just discovering ur show and loving it. Keep it up, brother!

How did I never to reply to your wonderful comment! Thank you for listening, thank you for writing, and thanks for detail about that Kendra release. Yes, every time I flip through stacks in a “vintage” shop, it’s THAT release and a handful of others that are like gold in the riverbed. I love the journey to try to find them. Best, David

hey David, I’ve been listening to Radio Junk Drawer for some years now when I can catch it. Ive always liked your show because of the obscure 60’s 70’s stuff you play . Really cool stuff. I;m a few years older than you (62) so I’m a huge Beatles guy. I play guitar (unrelated) a ton of Beatle material. Anyway, I streamed my first Radio Junk Drawer today and was super pleased about George’s Album. I never thought I would be able to connect with someone about the impact that had on me. I was thinking the whole time that you should play “be here now’ and sho nuff, you played it last. I cannot articulate my feeling for this album except it was extremely memorable for me..
PS. I have the guitar tablature book as well as the album of course. Great job man, hope to meet you some day maybe as we have very similar interest….
peace,
Biff

Man, your hitting my sweet spot with these Byrds songs. I was at the Cambridge Rolling Thunder review show (second row center) and remember McGuinn being all over the stage.

David – Have really enjoyed your radio show, especially through out the pandemic.
I’ve always been a big fan of the Fall and the Chameleons, and love your returns to them in your show. I grew up Down East on a weird little naval outpost left over from ww2. I had two amazing musical awakenings:
One from a pair of boys from St. Thomas who’s mother had married a navy man, and moved them to Winter Harbor. I was just coming aware of the Clash, and these two shared all their cassette tapes of reggae from their islands. The overlap was timely and magic.
Then, when I was a sophomore in consolidate school, Tanya arrived from Japan, her dad taking over command of the base,. (She is now Galen’s partner, small world..). She brought with her all kinds of bootleg tapes, including the Chameleons, and I was floored!
I don’t know where you grew up, or if you listened, but, when I’m listening to your show, sometimes, I’m reminded of Robert J. Lurtsema, from WGBH. It was syndicated here, and I grew up with it. I had a friend that later ended up working with him and said he had a rep as an old letch, and smoked cigars constantly, but, he had this bird track that he used that reminds me much of your show. He was king of the pause, the space between, and it was lovely. This was an era when the programming set the tone of the day, and his quiet psalms were welcome mid morning exhales.
All to say, your show has that quality for me. Not, of course, the letch, cigar smoke, but reflective still that we/I desperately need.

Thanks,

Ed, what a lovely gift you’ve sent to me. I’m delighted to have a listener so attuned to the music and the experience I try to convey each week. The details in your note are heartening–Fall and Chameleons, the boys from St Thomas, Tanya W, and the titanic Robert J, who had a similar effect on me in Sanford, Maine, as he had for you Downeast (is that Cutler you refer to?). When I resumed making radio in the pandemic, I changed the form of my show and allowed more space, more breath, more slow time. And in doing so I very much had RJL in mind. The birds, of course, are the most direct homage. Thank you for listening as much and as sensitively as you do, and thank you for writing. David
