I grew up in the Kennebunks. As a student at the University of Maine, Orono in 1973, I joined a handful of students in founding the Wilde-Stein Club in what was then called gay liberation. It ignited a firestorm of controversy for the next six months with fundamentalist preachers and conservative legislators (Democrat and Republican) railing against our very existence as a student group. In January, 1974, the Board of Trustees for the University system confirmed our right to organize and we went on to hold the first Maine Gay Symposium at UMO in April, 1974. This brought together activists from around the state and led to the founding of a state-wide organization, the Maine Gay Task Force. Our show, OUTCast, will address the rich history of the LGBTQ+ community here in Maine as well as bring to the fore the current challenges facing us today.
