WMPG Fat Tuesday Celebration

WMPG Community Radio presented the 24th annual Fat Tuesday Cajun Cookin’ Challenge on the Portland campus of USM on March 5, Mardi Gras Tuesday.

As is annual tradition, WMPG Community Radio offered a day of music, community and food to celebrate Mardi Gras. Rob Sylvain’s Cajun Aces performed Cajun and Acadian music live at midday. Eleven restaurants participated, with a broad variety of Cajun and New Orleans inspired cuisine:

  • Atchafalaya Kitchen & Catering
  • Bayside American Cafe
  • Gritty’s
  • Lazzari
  • Lenny’s Pub Westbrook
  • Po Boys & Pickles
  • Simply Vegan by Silly’s
  • Silly’s Restaurant
  • SMCC Culinary Arts Program
  • USM Dining by Sodexo
  • Whole Foods

Here are the results:

Third place: For this event, it’s unusual to promote a third-place winner, but this is a special case. The SMCC Culinary Arts program students created a delicious red beans and rice entry that sparked a lot of positive comment. WMPG loves students!  smccme.edu/academics/degree-programs/culinary-arts

Second place: Our long-time friends at Bayside American Cafe have taken second place with their Tennessee Gumbo and Biscuits. Chef Alana Woodbury and her assistant Drew developed the dish. baysideamericancafe.com
