HOW ARE WE DOIN’?
SPRING BEGATHON RESULTS & GRANT FUNDS RESCINDED
WMPG’s Spring Begathon was held from March 31 to April 6. The good news is that we received over 500 pledge calls of support for WMPG. The not-so-good news is that we did not meet our dollar goal. The goals set for each Begathon are derived directly from our operating budget and do not include “extra”. So when we plan for a $25,000 goal – a modest goal, even by community radio standards, we really need to reach that goal. This Begathon left us $2,541 short of that goal.
Another recent development is that funds for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) have been rescinded in the current grant year. What that means for WMPG is that $2,676 has been taken from our CPB award effective immediately.
While these are not huge amounts of money, WMPG’s budget is a bare bones deal – no frills and luxuries in it. As our aging equipment fails and needs repair and replacement, there really is no room for shortfalls. The costs of keeping WMPG on the air rise, just as all of us experience the rise in our expenses. To make up for the lost revenue, WMPG is about to launch a new fundraising effort.
Enter the SummerBeg! On Thursday, June 26, we’ll have the
power-packed one-day Begathon campaign to raise the dough we need to keep WMPG
the good and strong radio station it is. As the day approaches, you’ll
be hearing more about special on-air events and promotions for the SummerBeg.
You know us… we’re the ones who like to have a lot of FUN while
we raise money for WMPG!!!
If you’d like to help us get a head start on the summer fundraising efforts,
you can call Kelsey at 780-4916 or visit us online at wmpg.org and click on
the donate button to use PayPal to make your secure donation. Thanks for your
support of fresh, local, live Community Radio!
RETURN YOUR RETURNABLE BOTTLES & CANS AND SUPPORT WMPG!
Next time you bring back bottles and cans you can help support your favorite local community radio station... And you don’t even have to get dirty! CLYNK, a new local redemption program, will let you turn in a bag of bottles and/or cans at any participating Hannaford and will credit it to WMPG. There are special bags, which you can pick up here at WMPG, that have a barcode. When you fill them up and drop them off the barcode will credit your (5 and 15 cent) returns to us! It’s that easy.
Participating Hannaford stores include: Biddeford, Brunswick, Buxton, Falmouth, Lakes Region (Windham), Portland (Forest Ave), Saco, Sanford, Scarborough (CLYNK’s flagship location), South Portland (Mill Creek), Topsham, Westbrook, Yarmouth, and York.
A big thanks to Jan, host of Local Motives, who had some quick thinking when she learned about the program and added us in!
WMPG BOARD OF DIRECTORS SEEKS TWO LISTENER REPRESENTATIVES
WMPG'S Board of Directors is seeking two listeners from the Greater Portland Community as a representation of WMPG's audience. Listener Representatives are full board members and as such participate in formulating station policy and long range planning. These are two-year positions with meetings held the 2nd Wednesday of each month on the USM campus. Interested listeners can download an application here. Call 780-4424 for more information or to receive an application, or send an e-mail to stationmanager@wmpg.org. Deadline for applications is Monday, May 7th, 5pm.
WHAT MUSIC DOCUMENTARIES HAVE YOU BEEN WANTING TO SEE?
WMPG is planning to start a monthly film at USM. The focus is to bring music documentaries to you, our listeners. Do you have one you really want to see, have seen and want to share, or know of one coming out soon? If you have some ideas send them to Jim at stationmanager@wmpg.org or call him at 780-4424.
MAINE POERTY & WMPG
According to the Maine Arts Commission, there are more poets in Maine, per capita, than any other state. That’s pretty amazing – we’re lucky. WMPG is featuring many of Maine’s Contemporary poets in an hour-long documentary – Words From the Frontier: Poetry In Maine. The permier broadcast of Words From the Frontier is Thursday, May 15th at 8:30 AM.
Elizabeth Tibbetts. Kate Barnes. Ted Enslin. Gary Lawless. Jeffrey Thompson. These are just a few of the poets included in the program. We visit some at their homes, chat about their work, and, of course, listen to a lot of poetry.
To celebrate the documentary, WMPG is sponsoring a live poetry reading. Poets featured in Words From the Frontier, will read Saturday, May 17th at 5 pm at the Eastland Park Hotel, as part of the Maine Festival Of The Book.
So poetry lovers, make a note of it. Words From the Frontier: Poetry In Maine airing at 8:30 am, Thursday the 15th of May and a poetry reading Saturday the 17th at 5 pm at the Eastland Park Hotel. Sponsored by Maine Reads, Port Veritas, Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance, and Greater Portland Community Radio Station WMPG.
LOCAL MUSIC & A VOLUNTEER
Isaac of WMPG’s "The Locals " says “Marie Moreshead has an 8 song EP just completed and about to be released very soon. And by the way, two of those tracks on her EP were actually recorded in my own project studio.”
This month we welcome one show moving from the overnight into the afternoon, a semi-hostile takeover of an afternoon show and a couple of new shows moving in to the overnight, with more to come.
The new show in the afternoon is DJ Roy's Liberation by Sound, which has just taken up residence on Tuesday afternoons from 3-5pm, moving there from its former location early on Monday mornings, 4 - 6:30am. He describes it as an "Amped up show featuring new indie rock, African pop, underground hip hop, some experimental surprises, a dash of commentary on current events and occasional originally produced features."
The semi-hostile takeover is of Jim’s Land Of The Lost, which starting this week, will be converted intoLand Of The Lost Souls from now until the end of summer. DJ Special K will be digging 6 feet under to bring great Gothic music to the air… everything from the birth of the genre in the 70s to more modern Goth of today and everything related plus a sprinkling of Fortean and odd news. Think of it as the music of the Paris Underground (the catacombs that is)!
In the overnight, Monday morning early, 1:30 to 4am, we welcome Jeff with a brand new show, Here, There, and Everywhere. He writes, "I'll cover genres from the Staples Singers to Marvin Gaye, the Kinks to the Scissor Sisters, and Hank Williams Sr. to Albert King, from the past to the present and in between. Anything goes as long as it is melodic."
Then, just about 24 hours earlier in the schedule, Sunday morning early, 1 to 3:30am, there will be a brand new host, Butterfly, with a show so new it doesn't have a name yet. Stay up late on Saturday night, tune in, and be the first to find out. More next month...
