USM Student-Only Opportunities:
If you want to be an on air DJ you need to go through training weather or not you have prior experience. Training sessions are normally held every two months at our studios at USM in Portland, Maine. You will need to come in or call to see when the training sign up is posted. There are limited spots each round. If you would like to sign up for training please contact Dave Bunker.
When you sign up it will be for an evening orientation where you will learn a little more about the station. That evening you will sign up for the actual training sessions. Sessions are usually in the early morning or mid afternoon during a weekday. There are three and they last about a hour and a half each.
Training is free for USM students. A small, one time administration fee of $20 is charged to all non-USM trainees.
When training is completed you must complete a project and pass a quiz. At that time you will be "qualified for air" and can cover other shows or apply for an open slot, if available. Other audio trainings are also available after trainees have become qualified for air.
WMPG has many events during the year. We always need help, but it often changes. If you think you can take calls, pass out information, sell items, carry heavy boxes, and just about anything else that may come up check in with us! One of the busiest times we need help is during our bi-annual fundraiser, Begathon. We always need people who can help on the pledge lines, taking calls. You can contact Kelsey Perchinski for upcoming events that we need help at.
Other ways to get invloved can take two seconds, two months, or longer! You can help out the station by donating your old records, CDs, or audio equipment you no longer need. Perhaps you have experience with grant writing, sound mixing, journalism, or something else you can share. It takes the volunteers here at the station to get things going and keep things moving! If you have an idea of how you can help, let us know! Please contact Jim Rand if you can offer any of the above or have another idea.
If you know a specific genre of music or you just love all kinds and think you would like to be involved with the music department please contact Ron Raymond Jr for opportunities.
BELOW ARE OPPORTUNITES FOR USM STUDENTS ONLY
Some opportunities exist for internships. The student would need to speak with the appropriate WMPG manager and present their idea. If the manager agrees it is the students responsibility to set it up with the internship office at USM and their advisor. For more information about interning please contact Jim Rand.
Work Study at WMPG is for students who have been awarded federal work study funds as part of their annual financial aid package. Students must be enrolled at least half time or six credits. Most scheduled hours will be during weekdays, however work study students are an intregal part when events occur. There are several specific departments a student may move into, but all incoming students will have a general training. Opportunites are always available, however we do fill up fast, especially in the Fall semester. Please contact Kelsey Perchinski for more information about work study positions and to schedule an interview and tour.
