Democracy Now’s Amy Goodman to Speak in Portland, May 14


Amy Goodman, host and executive producer of the award winning independent daily news program “Democracy Now!” will speak in Portland on Saturday May 14, at Portland High School’s Ford Auditorium. Doors open at 1pm, and her talk begins promtply at 2. There will be a book signing at Portland High following the event.

WMPG and our community broadcasting partner, CTN5 Community Television are teaming up to present this very special event, marking the release of DemNowCoverArtDemocracy Now! Twenty Years Covering the Movements Changing America” by Amy Goodman, David Goodman and Denis Moynihan.

Democracy Now airs daily on both WMPG Community Radio and CTN5 Community Television.

Tickets for the talk are available in advance here and will also be available at the door, and are $15 in advance general admission, $10 for students (with valid photo ID). The last time Amy Goodman came to Portland High School in 2008, it was a sellout event. Advance ticket purchase is recommended.

The event will be hosted by WMPG’s public affairs producer Eric Poulin, host of “The Soapbox.” Amy Goodman will be introduced to the audience by renowned Maine artist Robert Shetterly, on a stage graced by his portrait of her, part of an award-winning project called Americans Who Tell The Truth.

There is a VIP reception with Amy prior to the auditorium event. It’s a chance to meet and talk with Amy one on one in a more casual social setting, with brunch refreshments. The reception starts at 12:30 pm at a venue that is within easy walking distance to Portland High. Tickets for the reception are $100 per person, and must be purchased in advance. Reception tickets include a signed copy of the new book, as well as admission and reserved seating at the talk.
