Pulitzer nominated author Dave Eggers and Valentino Achak Deng, one of 17,000 Lost Boys of Sudan - speak at USM
Valentino Achak Deng
On Sunday, February 25th, 2007, author, Dave Eggers, and Valentino Achak Deng spoke to a packed house at USM's Hannaford Lecture Hall. Deng a Sudanese "lost boy" is the hero of Eggers' new book What is the What. Eggers and Deng spoke conversationally about Deng's life, mixing his first person stories with readings from What is the What. The evening concluded with questions from the audience.

"I cannot recall the last time I was this moved by a novel. What is the What is that rare book that truly deserves the overused and scarcely warranted moniker of "sprawling epic". Told with humor, humanity, and bottomless compassion for his subject, one Valentino Achak Deng, Eggers shows us the hardships, disillusions, and hopes of the long suffering people of southern Sudan. This is the story of one boy's astonishing capacity to endure atrocity after atrocity and yet refuse to abandon decency, kindness, and hope for home and acceptance. It is impossible to read this book and not be humbled, enlightened, transformed. I believe I will never forget Valentino Achak Deng." --KHALED HOSSEINI, author of The Kite Runner

This was a fundraising event for The Telling Room, a Portland-based writing program for young people.

WMPG has begun its first major coordinated local news project with the 2006 election. We featured voices of candidates, voices of voters, locally produced reports on issues, and live debates and/or forums. Our coverage was wide-ranging, but focus on subject of interest to voters in greater Portland. We were excited to be collaborating with various other entities in our coverage, including The Bollard, The Muskie School, and faculty and students from USM's department of Political Science, among others. We continue to seek collaboration partners. For more information call (207) 780-4598 or e-mail the WMPG Program Director.

Artist Statement

A couple of years ago, we began exploring the South Portland side of Casco Bay. We decided to just look around and see what was there. Over the course of a summer, we rode our bikes along the coastline and began talking to people who live and work around the harbor. Since we're long-time community radio nuts it seemed natural to craft a radio show for WMPG-FM from our adventures. The idea for Aucocisco Radio was born...
"The "Lighthouse" from choppy waters"

PGM 1 - Ram Island Ledge Light

Steadfast, serene, immovable, the same, Year after year, through all the silent night Burns on forevermore that quenchless flame, Shines on that inextinguishable light! -Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Is there anything more emblematic of the Maine coast than a lighthouse? The large, unyielding towers lining our coast evoke a history of life on the dangerous seas. The seas are as busy as ever and the work is still dangerous, but these low-tech icons are getting high-tech makeovers making lighthouse keepers obsolete.

Joe Johansen spent two years living at Ram Island Ledge Light for his first tour of duty with the Coast Guard. He lived out there for 24 days at a time with one other person. And since there was no house on the ledge, they lived in the cramped tower. The light was operated manually and required round-the-clock attention. Now, the Coast Guard maintains the electronic light and visits only about every three months.

The computer operated lighthouses require very little attention and there are no staffed lighthouses left on the coast of Maine. Could any 21st century person actually live alone for weeks at a time with no modern conveniences? We may never know.

The Lorenzo Commentaries:
Lorenzo

In the summer of 2004 Steve Hirshon told me of his plans to put together a different kind of magazine show entitled Fore River Gazette and I knew I wanted to be a part of it. I'm sort of a pop culture nut and the chance to share my views to more than family and coworkers was thrilling. FRG ended its eight week run, but Steve was gracious enough to ask me to continue contributing commentaries to his Thursday morning drive-time show Huckkin' A Chainek (at 7:45AM). My subjects now go beyond popular culture, sometimes serious, sometimes trivial, but always, well, a Lorenzo commentary. Enjoy!

Download features here:

Updated: 9/08/09 Woodstock! Lorenzo interviews John Lehman, a former Mainer currently living in Maryland. He was there and tells us all about it! Click here for John Lehman interview!.

Lorenzo has always been a "BIG" Monkees fan and when WMPG began planning for a Fall 2008 Film Series he suggested us presenting the Monkee's cult psychedelic classic movie Head. Everyone thought this was a great idea and Lorenzo contacted Monkee Historian Andrew Sandoval to participate in the presentation by being interviewed live via the phone before the screening. This 19 minute interview was heard live by the theater audience. This a recording of the interview! Click here for Andrew Sandoval interview!.

The Lorenzo Radio Open Mic Series: Some great stuff hear!

On Thursday October 8, 2009 we presented the seventh edition of WMPG's Radio Open Mic. It was in front of a live audience, at the University of Southern Maine Portland Woodbury Campus Center Amphitheater and broadcast live on WMPG. It was a great show with more than twenty participants. We recorded it so if you missed it click here to hear the entire show.
Click to hear recording of Radio Open Mic 2009!

Us Folk host Chris Darling has said in interviews that he was a regular listener of my old 'MPG show Emotionally Bankrupt and Morally in Debt. I, in turn, am a big fan of him and his program. So when Chris needed a Christmas Eve sub and I had the day off work, I figured it was fate and offered my services. But I didn't want to just play CDs when Chris has on incredible live performers on week after week. I love the open mic concept in clubs but have never heard it done on the radio, so I asked Chris, he OK'd it, and Program Director Dave Bunker helped me make it a reality Thanks also to show producer Christina Truesdale and engineer Rick Alderette for giving up a piece of their Christmas Eve Day, and the performers who took the chance. This is how it began...flash forward to December '06 and Lorenzo was hosting Radio Open Mic 3 and this was such a success that WMPG couldn't wait another year to bring it back. For its first Spring edition, ROM4 aired on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28 in South by Southwest's usual time slot, 8:30-10:30AM (thanks, Lincoln!). Host Lorenzo Raffa presented for two hours of unscripted, off-the-cuff performances by local musicians, comics and whoever else shows up at the studio, as well as MP3s sent to radioopenmic@yahoo.com.

    Homelessness Marathon- Voices were heard

Karen D'Andrea from WMPG's Sound Ecology
Karen D'Andrea from WMPG's Sound Ecology hosted 24 hour marathon outdoors to raise awareness

In conjunction with the 5th annual National Homelessness Marathon, WMPG Radio and Sound Ecology together with the community of Portland hosted our own Homelessness Marathon on February 5 and 6, 2002. Over a dozen shelters and service providers stayed outdoors in downtown Portland's Monument Square to raise awareness about Homelessness. WMPG Producer Karen D'Andrea was visited by US Representative Tom Allen and Portland Mayor Karen Gerghety.

The mission of the national radio broadcast is to let homeless people speak to the nation. But that's not all that happens during this annual, overnight program which has originated from a different city each year. Host "Nobody" broadcasts from outdoors to dramatize the plight of people with nowhere to go in the cold. For 14 hours he interviews experts on various aspects of poverty in America (e.g. health care, hunger, public housing, etc.) and takes calls from around the country in addition to talking with homeless people. This year WMPG was invited to provide an hour long panel which was broadcast Nationally. Karen D'Andrea spoke with Maine experts Mary Ann Gleason, Don Gene, Mike Finnegan, and Carrie Buntrock at 7am on Wednesday morning. The panel sat outdoors during the broadcast and the temperature was a cold 15 degrees.

Visit the national web site at Homelessness Marathon or the local site for updates at Sound Ecology.

    Halloween '07 Special, part I

    Includes two pieces:

    "The Statement of Randolph Carter"

A man is brought into the police station of small southern town, delirious and rambling about demons and the occult. But though the authorities remain skeptical, eerie events begin to unfold as he recites his terrible tale, and they all soon realize that things have been opened that would have better remained closed. This masterful adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's story was done by William Dufris of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, an award-winning audiobook narrator who has shared the mic with some of the world's top talent. This installment, from his "Nightmares on Congress St." collection, is sure to make you think twice about opening doors to unknown worlds.

    "God of the Razor"

A man investigates an old Texas mansion looking for antiques, but soon finds more than he bargained for. Because in this lonely stretch of town, ancient gods walk the earth, and their followers have no choice but to follow their twisted demands. This haunting story by horror master Joe R. Lansdale was adapted by Jerry Stearns and produced by AM FM Theater as part of the Grist Mill series, a horror program dedicated to chilling contemporary tales. "God of the Razor" won the Ogle Award for best Fantasy Audio Drama in 2007.

    Halloween '07 Special, part 2

    Includes two pieces:

    "Dark Passenger"

Two friends head to Downeast Maine to say farewell to a crumbling house of many memories -- though most no one wants to remember. They scare each other along the way, but the laughter stops when those fears begin to get too real. But what's lurking beneath the surface has started to awake, and there's no turning back. FinalRune Productions' "Dark Passenger" is inspired by a true story too eerie to forget and was recorded on location in Old Orchard Beach, and produced by WMPG's Frederick Greenhalgh.

    "Blind Man's Confession"

A young man goes on a ride one night he'll never forget. Another chilling tale by FinalRune Productions, produced for Halloween in 2006.
