A visit to Island Treasure Toys will surely bring out the kid in you. And the good news? This is one store where you're allowed to touch ... and feel ... and play. In fact, co-owners Anita and Jim Demetropoulos encourage it.

"It's all about helping our customers find the perfect toy," Anita explained. And the store is chock full of unique choices. You'll find classic toys from Melissa and Doug, Waldorf, BOC, and HABA. Along with toy choices that also support Anita and Jim's commitment to recycling and protecting the earth: The Australian Anamalz line of wooden animal toys, made from sustainable maple and textiles, and the hard-to-resist Green Toys line, which even includes a wooden recycling truck. When I asked Anita to describe the perfect toy, she didn't hesitate to answer. "For us, that means a well-made, long-lasting toy that'll continually spark your child's imagination."

Keeping the "home town general store" flavor

Island Treasure Toys began in 2001 as a small home-based business on, yes, a small island off the coast of Maine. Anita's eye for unique toys proved exceptional, and within about a year, it was clear that it was time to move the business out of their home. They opened their first brick-and-mortar store in Yarmouth, and there are now two additional store locations, in Freeport and Bath.

On a recent visit, I wondered aloud how Anita and Jim manage to keep that "home town general store" flavor now that Island Treasure Toys has become much larger. "It's all about the staff," explained Anita. "When you come into an Island Treasure Toys store, you're treated like family. We greet you personally -- by name, if you've been here before. And it's likely that we'll remember your kids' favorite toys, so it'll be easy to recommend something new that both you and your kids will love."

In addition to friendly, knowledgeable staff to help you make the right selection, it's the little "extras" that make shopping at Island Treasure Toys special. There's free popcorn at the new downtown Bath store. You can walk out with a free helium balloon if you and your kids are shopping at the Yarmouth store. And no matter which location you visit, gift wrapping is free, and beautiful.

Anita told me that there are also lots of crazy and special announcements and offers on their Facebook page. Just "like" Island Treasure Toys on Facebook to get in on the fun!

Stop by and say hello

It's no surprise that Anita and Jim support WMPG as underwriters, since they've been avid listeners for many years (even before starting their toy business). So do let them know if you heard about Island Treasure Toys on WMPG.

And my suggestion? When you visit one of the three Island Treasure Toys stores, be sure to plan for plenty of extra time. There's just so much to explore, and you won't want to miss a thing.
